Abstract

This research aims to study the urgency of character education in pre-school age, specifically in the context of calistung (reading, writing, and counting) as one of the important aspects of character education. This research uses qualitative methods with a literary study approach. Data is collected from various sources, including books, journals, articles, and official documents relevant to research topics. Research results show that character education at pre-school age is crucial to shaping a child's moral, cognitive, social, and emotional foundation. Calistung is an effective medium for developing a child's character, such as intelligence, creativity, independence, and responsibility. However, calistung should not be understood narrowly as merely the mastery of basic skills but must be integrated with character values that correspond to cultural, religious, and national contexts. The research provides a number of recommendations to improve the quality and relevance of character education in preschool age, including: (a) developing a holistic, flexible, and child-based curriculum; (b) training and empowering teachers and parents as agents for character education; (c) providing learning facilities and resources that support meaningful calistung learning; and (d) carrying out a sustained evaluation and monitoring of the character education processes and outcomes in pre-school age.
